Toshiba is notorious for failed inverters that drive the backlight for the 
display.  Usually have to replace it.  I found an inverter for an older 
Toshiba on ebay for about $20.
You should also check the power settings to be sure it isn't shutting down 
the display too soon.  You can plug in an external monitor to see what's 
going on.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop problem:  The desktop is fine for the 
first few minutes and then goes dark - too dark to see icons on the desktop. 
Anyone know the cause and solution for this?
