Carroll, I know that sounds like it should work - but the thing is, I can't
get past the first boot screen.  So I can't use a floppy-based (or any
other-based) program to do the job.

No matter how I try to configure the BIOS, I can't get the computer to boot
when the 40G Maxtor is connected.
