Bruce,
Western Digital drives typically require NO jumper if the drive is a single.
However, all the models I own will boot after a very long wait if improperly
configured via jumper.  Some BIOS will not wait that long before timing
out with an error message.  How are you setting it in bios as a slave?
Auto-detect works for detecting the slave okay, right?  The drive is probably
okay.
Western Digital and several others ship with a single jumper positioned
horizontally on the pins as a means of convenient storage for the jumper,
this has no effect on configuration because the jumper block is designed
with pin pairs arranged vertically.
