Hi Carol,

What happens when you run the defragmenter? Does it start only to go so far
then start over again? Try bringing up the "Close Program" window
(Ctrl+Alt+Del) and select each item listed one by one and "End Task" on
everything but Explorer. If you use a screensaver, temporarily disable it by
resetting it to "None" in Control Panel \ Display Properties. Then attempt
to run Scan Disk and Defragmenter again.

If it fails to complete following the above procedure, restart the computer
in Safe Mode and try it again. While restarting, continuously tap the "F8"
or "Ctrl" key until you get the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu. Choose
option 3 by pressing the 3 key and press Enter.

Not all programs or processes place icons in the System Tray so closing the
ones that are there doesn't mean there isn't anything running in the
background.

Subject: Re: [PCBUILD] Defrag problem

I have Win98SE. I shut everything down in my systray, but defrag won't run.
I hit
cont/alt/delete and it says Explorer is running as well as Kb891711,
Ashmaisv and
Ashwebsv. I know that Kb891711 is part of the latest MS security patch, but
don't
know why it's running in the background. And the two 'Ash' files are part
of Avast.
Does anyone know why those programs are running, when everything is
supposedly shut
down? (There was nothing showing active in my system tray.)
