Remember to get a Cross-over cable - not a standard cable - if you are not using a hub.  Then you just do the standard networking stuff on the computers for a peer-to-peer network.

I have a Compaq 1700 and a Compaq 5600 of which both have ethernet
connectors. they are about 50 ft apart. Can I connect them together and
