Could be bad RAM. If there are 2 sticks, remove each one and see if system 
will boot with only one in place.
  Otherwise try another stick if available.

RAM is one of the first things POST checks. The single beep indicates that 
it hasn't got far into POST. It can also give rise to erratic error messages.
