Jun commented that he thought the 40Gb format was way too long at 55minutes.
I agree - the time should have been more like 15 minutes.

My point was not so much concerned with how I could do it faster, but
whether this behaviour might be indicative of some other problem.

Thanks to all who commented, and to Phil, for the link to the latest Western
Digital diagnostic prog.  However, this test found nothing amiss.

drive take to format? I had already posted my query for format speed, but

I'm affraid this is a bad news.  Normally, you only have three
possibilities: HDD itself, the cable or mobo.  So far from what I've seen, I
would direct point to the mobo.  WD has a diag program to download, you
should run it first, the best idea is the run the test from a known good PC
with the suspected cable and HDD.
