  Our limited experience with enabling SMART was that it somehow re-enabled
IDE support on our all-SCSI servers.  We had to turn it off to get them to
boot properly.  My working rule-of-thumb since has been that "SCSI and
SMART don't mix".

  Presumably, though, somebody at IBM knew better than that, in order to
make this drive.  I wonder what the real story is....

  On our systems, SMART was an option enabled in the CMOS setup for the
motherboard/chipset.
