Actually I did read the manual, and then read it again.  I found the place to
short the CMOS, but now don't think that will help.  There are two tiny solder
points that are supposed to be shorted, but I still don't know how to do that.
I do think there are other problems, though and will call the manufacturer as
soon as I can.  It is a lithium battery, though. and thanks for the tip about
screwdrivers and batteries.
