Faulty monitor - rapidly switching on and off

Good day

While working on my PC, the monitor started flickering. Then suddenly the
screen went black and the power-on indicator started flashing. It sounds
asif a relay is repeatedly switched on and off.

Later I disconnected the monitor from the PC and connected it directly to
the power source. As soon as I switched the monitor on, the power-on
indicator started flashing (with the sound of the relay changing states).

I have a generic 17" monitor. Win 98 picks it up as a Delta-???.

Anyone have any ideas?
