I'm sure you are speaking of a PCI card -- but by chance, could this be a 
USB Linksys?  Older machines are a lot of trouble with newer USB devices.

if this is in fact an internal card, try experimenting in your BIOS settings 
with assigning and unassigning IRQ's.

just my .02 dollar's worth.
