Hi-

I'll start with an apology- I know that this question might be more
properly addressed to the Win95 list, but it's really (I think) a hardware
issue, and the folks on this list just seem to be more astute in that area.

To cut to the chase-

On a recently built machine, Win95 OSR2.1 accesses the disc at regular
intervals (every five seconds or so), even when the machine is idle. These
accesses have an almost rhythmic sound, leading me to think that the same
basic thing is happening every time. This same machine, booted into NT 4.0
Workstation does not do this, making me think that perhaps the accesses are
OS based.

An older (4 years) Pentium based machine with the same Windows build
installed on it (hehheh), does not do this. Making me think that perhaps
the situation is a interaction between newer hardware and the OS.

And finally, a brand new Compaq Armada laptop, which has Win95B installed
on it, and which I just received for use in my job, does the rhythmic
access thing also.

I'm wondering if this might have something to do with the read ahead
optimization capability that Windows has (as a setting), or is a phenomena
related to newer BIOS's, or what?

Any input on this annoying behavior will be appreciated.

Thanks-
