You can try running ScanDisk or Norton Disk Doctor... it will
fix the errors.

Older drives (40 Mb) are probably in the age of 5-6 years,
so they're potentially unstable, and it will only get worse. I heard
that HD's lifetime is about 5 years before the performance
starts to drop due to different problems (bearings wear,
positioning errors, electronic failures...)
