Hugh,

"my user doesn't know DPI from a DIP switch."
lol

If other apps aren't having problems with the printer, I would suspect Works.

So, assuming it's Works that is the problem, I did quite a lot of searching with little success, but found the
following patch for Works 4.0 by entering:
"No default printer is selected" (without quotes) at google.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/19035

You'll have to read further than I did, but it may also work with Works 4.5 - here's an excerpt:

Product Description:
When you try to print from Works 4.0, you may receive the following error message:
No Default Printer Selected.
Use the Windows Control Panel to specify your printer.
You may receive this error even though you have a default printer selected in Windows 95.
This problem may occur with the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 5L Printer, Canon LPB-460, or with other printers
using the Windows Printing System.
Editor's Notes:
This patch also works in XP for the Epson C82 printer.
