From: Bob Deschamps :Subject: [PCBUILD] Disk controller and PCI Bus

> Please excuse the length of this post. I don't know if this is a minor
hiccup or if the fertilizer is in the ventilator. Results of a visit to
PCPitStop revealed the following problems:
> 1. Device or Driver Problem
> PCI Bus (Code 2)
> Secondary IDE controller (single fifo) (code 29)
> Checking the Device Mgr, the following are listed under HD controller:
> - Primary IDE controller (single fifo)
> - Standard Dual PCI IDE controller
> - Standard IDE/ESDI HD controller.
> When I checked the "Properties" of each, there were "No conficts", "Device
is working properly", etc. IRQ check shows:
> IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (single fifo)
> 14 Standard Dual PCI IDE controller
> 15 Standard IDE/ESDI controller .
> IRQ's 5 and 12 are free.

the following:

> 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
> 15 Intel 82371AB PCI Bus Master IDE controller.
> I tried to "Add new hardware", looking for the Intel 82371 driver. No
luck.

> I seem to remember Bus mastering as being a good thing to have enabled.
Is this assumption valid?

> 2. PCI Bus (Code 2)

exclamation point. When Device Mgr is viewed "By connection", the first
(OK) PCI Bus is shown under "Computer". The second PCI Bus entry (with the
yellow exclamation mark) is shown under "Plug and Play BIOS"). What is the
purpose of the second bus? Is this related to problem #1?

Bob,

As I remember Windows 95 does not come with drivers for your chipset the
Intel 82371 AB. If either of the hard drive controllers are running in MS
Dos compatibility mode, you will have to edit the registry to remove the
NOIDE entry at this key :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS

You can check this by right clicking "My Computer" and selecting
"Properties" from the menu. Select the "Performance" tab of the "System
Properties" box, both the "file System" and "Virtual Memory" should say 32
bit not MS Dos Compatibility Mode. You can find the drivers for your
motherboard here (BMIDE_95.exe) if you don't already have them:
http://www.azzaboard.com/download.html

This is MS KB article concerning the Bus master drivers:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q151/9/11.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=g
n&FR=0

You will need to install the drivers first, then restart in "Safe Mode" and
uninstall all Hard disk controller drivers. Restart the system and Win 95
should redetect your hard disk controllers and install the correct drivers.
