Just to add to what Earl has said:

I just got rid of my worthless JVC CD-R and replaced it with a
 Panasonic CW7502B CD-Recorder, (the same writer UZi is
using).   I have Adaptec's Easy CD Creator Pro v3.5 and after
installing the CD-R, Win98 recognized it immediately.   I have
created three CDs since installing it yesterday with no problems.

Try downloading the upgrade.

Just a note.   My JVC CD-R went bad after only 14 months...
and no help from JVC.
