The last time I built a PC we were doing 486's but I think I'd like to build
an AMD/Athlon unit as a backup system for my family. We would use it
primarily for:

Internet Access
Converting family photos to CD form
Word processing and spreadsheet household chores. (Word/Excel preferred)
Some gaming for children but definitely not serious high level gaming.
I'd like to keep the investment at about $1000 and for that price I'd like
to have a PC with more pizzazz than the equivalent Brand Name Model.
Reliability is an important factor, overclocking etc. is not.

Can I get some suggestions on the MOBO and CPU?
