Welcome to the club! I grind my teeth every time I use XP because of this infuriating trait. Hope I can find a solution before I get down to the gums and I'm forced to subsist on babyfood.

It's got to be something simple - a registry setting obviously.

You didn't say exactly where you're up to in your plan to control this unruly (and damn expensive) OS. I've got my XP Pro\SP-1 to the point where it remembers nearly everything but the fact that I want each folder to open at about one-sixth screen size.

So it's holding OK with Classic view, no standard buttons or address bar, List viewing mode and every new folder with it's own window - but every newly opened folder insists on claiming the whole screen. Previously accessed folders SOMETIMES remember their pre-programmed reduced sizes but not reliably. And every new opening gets the mandatory full screen.

(Bill's either short sighted or just likes to see the BIG PICTURE)

Well, I dunno the answer - I thought I had it a while back when I discovered that holding down Ctrl while clicking a folder at least opened the child in the same size as the parent. But it also closes the parent at the same time, which is not the effect I want. Backspacing out of the child reveals the parent folder, and the child remains on screen also, but it's getting way too complicated for busy professionals who have better things to do than keep tinkering with their OS.

As I've wailed before, how difficult would it have been for M$ to have designed this better?

Subject: [PCBUILD] Win XP Pro will NOT remember folder views

I have a most annoying problem. No matter what I do, I just CANNOT get my
new Win XP Pro to remember the individual views of folders. I HAVE clearly
checked the "Remember each folder's view settings" under 'Tools\Folder
Options\Views\ but it makes ZERO difference.

I am fully able to use the "reset all folders" button and EVERY folder on my
system will revert to Tile View default. I can also set any folder on my
system to some other setting, such as "Detail View" and use the "Apply to
all folders" button and as advertised it applies that view to EVERY single
folder on my system. But there is no way I can set an INDIVIDUAL folder's
view settings differently after either of these steps.

I have tried changing views, and then closing that window while holding down
the "CTRL" key or the "SHIFT" key (tricks I recall reading from time to
time, but believe me, the settings will NOT stick no matter what I do.

Is there some other over-riding default somewhere that I don't know about.

I should add that I use XP Pro at work, and have used it at home as well and
have never encountered such a persistent refusal to do what it is supposed
to do. Sure, from time to time Windows has always seemed to "forget" a
folder's settings and I need to re-do that folder's setting, but I have
never yet found a situation where NO FOLDER can be set differently no matter
  what I do.

  Any help out there?

  Michael
