Hello all,

In an effort to install a new, 40G WD HD in an older PC, I find myself with a problem I really hadn't anticipated. Using a Win98 bootdisk from freepctech.com as well as the "Ultimate Boot Disk," I have tried to boot my PC from the floppy with the CD-ROM support. Now this is the same PC with which I have successfully completed the same request before at least twice...using the same CD and the previous HD. The BIOS has auto-detected both the CD and the HD but yet both boot floppies cease operation when it comes to the point of loading the CD drivers--the drive stops accessing the floppy and so it just sits there as if waiting for a response from ??? (the HD?---BIOS?). (In order to be sure that the CD is being detected by the BIOS I configured the following boot order: Floppy, CD, IDE-0. When reading from the floppy fails it automatically goes to the CD--I can see the read light is on--and then asks for a disk with a good OS.) Does someone know what I'm missing here? By the way, in ancitipation of potential problems installing a new HD with an AMI BIOS dated mid-1995, I followed instructions in Bigelow's PC Repair and Maintenance book about having the HD auto-detected by the BIOS and then manually adjust the cylinder and head numbers to work around the lack of BIOS support for such a large drive.

Hopefully I've provided enough information; if not, please let me know.

Thanks for the help.
