This sounds like a BIOS or Motherboard issue.
Check you Laptop manual. It will tell you what the maximum amount of
installed RAM can be .
  Laptops are very proprietary and it may not accept more then another 8
megs or you might have your modules installed in incorrect amounts.

I just received a 16 Mg Ram Module for a Digital HiNote laptop.
