  If you get this message when you try to boot from C:, but you can
see C: when you boot from A:, this is absolutely typical of the
primary partition on C: not being marked "active".

  Your sequence of events leading up to this, however, is not
something that should cause this.  A more likely problem, in your
case, may be that the drive's "partition table" (where this active
setting would be stored) has gotten corrupted.
  It's possible that there's no physical damage, and that the drive
can be returned to physical service by some combination of virus
disinfectant (try this first!), low-level format (not normally
recommended for EIDE; consult drive manufacturer), FDISK and FORMAT.
But you'll need professional help to recover any files that were
stored on the drive.
