Hi Bonnie -

Perhaps because the available external floppy drive had been plugged into
its' dedicated port at one time.  I've owned a number of Tecras, all of
which used an external drive.  I'm not familiar with 8100s, but I imagine
they are similar in this nature to their predecessors.
