Hi all,

My mother in law is experiencing some modem problems and I'm trying to help
her out long distance. She has an older system: Micron Pentium 200 running
Win95 OSR2. A while back her modem ceased to work suddenly and she
suspected lightning damage from a recent storm (something they get a lot of
in the mountains of Colorado). She replaced the old ISA (Brand unknown)
modem and put in a new PCI U.S. Robotics 56K modem and added a new surge
protector with phone jack. After some struggle getting it to work on her
second line, the next day it mysteriously stopped working (I don't know how
thoroughly she tested it). She's discovered, however, that the modem works
fine when plugged into the first line but not the second. When plugged
into the second she doesn't even get a dial tone. Note that the telephone
works fine on this second line. Also I should note that her "two line"
system utilizes a splitter at the jack. She has a single jack with a small
splitter that provides two jacks for the first line and one for the
second. Lastly, as I alluded to above, she lives in a very rural area and
feels that may be part of her trouble.

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions on what I can have her try?

Thanks,

Bill Nussbaumer
