From the information u have supplied, I would buy a new MB.

Messing around w/BIOS is a pain and can be extremely dificult unless u know
exactly what u are doing. Be sure to get a late model MB that will support
Master Bus/UDMA and latest technologies and stick to a brand name. A good
place to start looking is in the Computer Shopper, A big fat monthly
publication available at news stands/bookstores, about $3.95. Also, u didn't
mention your win95 version. OSR2 (win95b) supports large HD's up about 8MB and
FAT32. You can also download Microsoft service release 2 to support the above
as an upgrade if u have win95a.

SO...... for about $125 and a little research u can have the latest, and u
will learn alot. (I did this about 2 months ago and my computer flies!) GOOD
LUCK!
