You should be able to do both, as long as the you have the proper drivers
for the modem and your serial port or PCMCIA slot are set up and working.
I've got an old NCR 486 Laptop that I've successfully used with both these
solutions.  IE 4.0 is Waaay to slow to surf the web with though on that old
boy.
