Howard, I'm no expert on monitors but I've opened a couple and you won't need any special tools. Here's one tip I found on the net several years back. It was posted by some guy who reckoned he'd revived many ailing monitors with the method.

All he did was open up the box and blow it out with a powerful air jet. His theory was that monitors attract dust, and that the dust tends to fuse into a layer which can short out components.

Subject: [PCBUILD] Can I replace a monitor cable?

I've never opener up a monitor before (last thing was a Hallicrafters
Kinescope!) and I want to replace a video cable. The monitor when pluged in
(any computer) turns very dark, indicating there is a connection, so I
believe the cable is bad. How difficult is this, do I need any special
  tools? Thanks!
