Thanks to JMB.  Only one computer is on the same line at any one time with
the computer/modem in question.  I am aware of the "REN" numbers.  What
changed  was that I moved to a new house.

I have run this computer all by itself on the phone line and this still
happens when I try to use tone dialing.  The other computer works just fine
on this line.

This may just be moot anyway, because I am dialing into the ISP at 50,666K/s
anyway using the "pulse" method and this is fine.  I just would like to
understand why this happened because I help many people with computer
problems and it would be good to find a way to fix this rather than use a
"work around".

Well, it seems that your phone company has not thrown pulse dialing to
the wind.  Actually, you are probably in luck.  Technically, all common,
residential telephone lines must be capable of pulse dialing.  This is
because the phone company is allowed to charge an extra tariff for tone
