Need help with bootup error

Occasionally (3-4 times in the last 5-6 weeks) my system aborts on
bootup.  The error message says Bad PnP Serial ID Checksum,   Device ID
2G*#(,  Serial Number E980E980
F1 for setup, Esc to boot

I then press Esc to complete the reboot.  But I am unable to establish
the modem connection.  After I then reboot the system, everything works
fine.  Any ideas?  Thanks.
