Just my 2 cents worth here. Most computers that I've worked with that use a
mouse on the com port seem to cause similar problems. As you found the hard
way, it was easier to install a PS2 mouse.

Subject: Re: [PCBUILD] Digital camera connection problem

I use a HPC-30 digital camera, and when I first got it I couldn't make it
work. I got the same error you are getting. It was a conflict between my
mouse and my camera. It boiled down to this, I could resolve the conflict,
but then I couldn't simultaneously use my modem. I suppose you could say it
was a three way conflict. I fiddled with settings, and changed IRQ's for
hours trying to get all three to play nicely. Finally, I resolved it by
purchasing a PS/2 mouse. Now they all three live happily together.
