Ah!  Thank you Earl and Jim for correcting my understanding and my
math.
Then, if I get 3.52KB per sec I'm really getting something like 35,200
bps, although it's not all the data I'm d/lding but includes these
modem protocol bits as well.
That's a little better speed than I'd thought.
