  192.168.1.1 is probably a factory default setting for the "inside"
interface of the router.  There are several reasons why you might not
be able to ping it:

1.  How are you connecting to it?
  If you are connecting the router to a hub or switch, that uses a
normal "straight through" cable, but if you're trying to unplug a
songle PC from the hub/switch and plug it directly into the router,
that requires a "crossover" cable instead.

2.  Is that its address?
  While that may be the default, your friend may have changed it.
There's usually a way to reset it to the original settings.

3.  Are you trying to ping from a compatible address?
  The router interface settings include both an IP address
(192.168.1.1) and a subnet mask (probably 255.255.255.0, but there
*are* other possibilities).  The pinging PC will need to have an
address in the same range -- but not identical.
