The software does download a bunch of data at one time, about 250K or so, I
think, then it analyzes it.  Once the analysis is finished, the software
will then upload the results to the server and download the next set of
data.

You should also be able to configure the software to ask permission prior to
connecting with your modem.

You don't need a dedicated connection.
