With the newer systems and equipment it usually doesn't make any
difference.  As an aside, I usually put the cd-rom player on my sound
card's IDE controller if it has one (many do), and leave an open IDE
channel for any future devices (Zip, IDE tape, etc.).  Only the cd-rom
should be connected to the sound card though.
