  Several people have already suggested some very good online
resources, so I won't repeat them.  (Several have also recommended
that you go ahead and do this, and I second that, too.)

  But I haven't seen anyone else point out that "Build Your Own PC"
is a fairly popular community college/adult education course
offering, and taking such a course provides a few months' access to a
knowledgable local instructor, and the company of a number of others
who are embarking on the same adventure.  It's a whole other kind of
resource and support.

  When your computer is lying in pieces in front of you, online might
not be the most convenient place to turn for help.
