On my 'Dell' computer I have 2 USB ports
OS Windows98

Are they USB-1 ?
How to upgrade them to USB-2

--------------------------------------------------------------------
USB 1.0 is 12 Mb/s and has support from Win 95b to the present and is
available on most any modern chipset motherboard or usb card.

USB 2.0 is much newer & has a bandwidth of 480 Mb/s but has very limited support
& touchy requirements to achieve.

USB 2 must first be supported at the chipset level of a motherboard or expansion card. Second if it is supported on the chipset of a motherboard it is only available
with a limited bus( data path) range.
For example, the Intel 850E chipset supports both front & rear usb
channels, however only the rear can provide usb2 and only if the front
is disabled. If both the front & rear channels are used the controller
                  defaults to usb1 performance.
Third the operating system must support it. Win XP, Win 2k both will if they're
compatible with your motherboard chipset & the correct driver is loaded in the case of Win 2k. Win98 does not support usb2. 4th USB2 must also be supported by the device driver plugged into the usb port or it will default to usb1 performance.

Currently, its best use is networking dsl or cable modems that come with newer
drivers. Also note all of this is from my limited exp. w/usb2 & therefore as the
technology continues to gain support some of these conditions may already
be improved upon.
