Font Folder Slow to Open

XP Pro with all updates
512 RAM
AMD Athlon 1.2
5 GB free on C:

When I click in the Font folder in Control Panel it takes 2-3 minutes to
open (387 files, 33 MBs). Same in Windows Explorer.
Photoshop and Illustrator pause for a long time at the "Loading Fonts"
dialogue. Both programs work normally after loading.
I examined this folder at the Command prompt and see no anomalies.
I have tried a System restore and Tweakui's "Repair" option to no avail.
"Switch user" is also much slower that usual.
I'm not aware of any recent changes that may have caused this, and would
appreciate any suggestions.
