Here's my favorite power strip tale, which may be instructive. I installed a new printer for a friend only to find it was DOA, totally unresponsive. I called the store and was told by their tech rep to plug it into a different outlet. No need; it was plugged into a live power strip that was also feeding the computer and monitor successfully. So, I returned the printer for exchange. New printer showed the same DOA symptoms! It turns out the power strip had five outlets, only two of which were working. The tech rep had the right idea, but my "logic" defeated it.
