We're still talking about ribbon cables?  There's really no trick as the cable
is exactly the same width as the top half of the connector, thus it aligns
itself.  Just be sure  the connector is "square" with the cable before you clamp
it.  It is possible to clamp it slightly askew.  If your "eyeballing" isn't that
good, use the corner of a sheet of paper or cardboard to align the edge of the
cable with the connector edge.  It's a good 90 degree reference.
