Bonnie, it sounds like the option to 'check surface for errors' is enabled.
In that case, an entire scan of your HDD would take the length of time you say.
I don't know of any program that can do a surface scan of an entire hard
drive in 30-90 seconds. Depending on the size of the drive, it usually takes quite
a long time. I had to reconstruct some programs that were corrupted in bad
sectors on my HDD, which is 30Gb, and that process took around 50 hours. The
error reporting you are seeing may be from the option to find and fix errors with
files and folders and not with the physical condition of the disc itself.
