Michael,

You are probably asking how to tell if your installed OS is 32 or 64bit.
Most likely it is 32bit, since support for 64bit Windows XP is limited.

I believe if you open "My Computer" and select from the help menu, "About
windows", it will tell you. Also, on the 64bit installations I have used,
the logo when booting says "Windows XP 64 bit edition".

There would ne no harm if you attempt to install the wrong one, as the OS
will reject any installation that is for the wrong mode.

Our dell support window says that:
Our PC is using an Intel Core 2 Duo processor which was found to have a

processor Microsoft released a hotfix that improves the processor's
reliability. You should install this hotfix to prevent problems with your
PC.
