Hi Hugh and Paul,
Thanks very much for your suggestions but I think the problem is with 
the dvd drive itself, I managed to get hold of a similar laptop and 
swapped the drives over and the original works ok now. Will have to try 
to find a replacement drive - ebay perhaps.
Anyway, many thanks for your help, and for explaining how to do the 
factory reset.
