My Motorola SurfBoard cable modem also can be connected either USB (with
software drivers) or to a network card.  I purchased a $19 network card for
mine since it gives me a lot more flexibility down the road.

If you ever want to add a second PC on the modem (which I did later), it
will be easy by adding a hardware router.  Home router prices are falling
rapidly as there are more home networks and more companies making them
now.  The newest ones are really simple to install and offer great
protection from outside intruders.
