Have you checked for firmware updates for your SMC 4-port
router/switchbox?  I fixed some problems with my D-link router by
downloading and flashing my router firmware to a later version.

By the way, the symptoms of not logging on the network every time was the
same symptoms I had with the "almost connected" bad cable.  Apparently the
wires were close enough to get a weak signal across the small gap sometimes
and then not work other times.  With my network I was so sure that the
problem was with my router that I bought another, a LinkSys, and it had the
same problems as the D-link (not logging in and intermittently working).  I
finally pulled a long single piece cable from the router to my PC and
plugged it in and it worked flawlessly.  I never found where my original
cable had the bad connection, I just pulled and terminated a new one.
