hard drive upgrade

I put this question in a few days ago but didn't receive any response.
I have a HPpavilion4440 with a 4.3 gig hard drive. Have purchased and installed a Maxtor 20gig.
Formatted using the Max-Blast software that came with the drive.
The only thing that i didn't use was the drive interconect cable that came with the unit as i think my internal cable is the same.
Am finding that the new drive seems to run a lot slower than my original even tho it is rated at 7200rpm.
Any help would be appreciated .Also upgraded from 64 to 128meg of ram.
