At the risk of beginning to drift a bit from the thread, I
thought it might be wise to interject here that, as far as cable
Internet access is concerned, there are a number of different
methodologies. I don't pretend to be an expert on these systems,
but in the Buffalo, New York area, a company providing cable
Internet access has a 'hybrid' level of access (based on distance
from a 'certain point'), which requires a modem for the initial
connection and upstream communication and a Network card for
receiving.  The speed is said to be ca. 6Mb/sec. downstream,
however this is directly relative to the number of subscribers
and can be expected to go down.

The upshot is, until you are certain the modem will not be
required, don't make an "art piece" of it.
