Typically, if you have a lan connected to a Cable modem, the single
most secure way to protect your lan from outsiders is to use a
basic router, such as a Linksys BEFSR41. Connect the modem
to the router and your lan is protected as long as you do not
enable any exterior ports on the router. It is an excellent hardware
firewall. I have been using one of these for a couple of years
now along with an RCA Cable Modem... the router can be
purchased for under $100. There are numerous other brands
of routers available also.
