You said you changed memory. I am not sure what you meant by that? I expect that 256MB RAM is too small to run xp. My guess is that 512MB would be minimal and 1GB would be optimal. I assume you have 2 RAM slots, so my suggestion would be add another 512MB. If you can borrow some from someone and try it that would be your best option. (Make sure it is the same type.)
