It might be true, but I have an antique 96 Mb ALPA drive (ide) that
would be recognized if and only if it is a single drive on its
channel. No amount of jumper switching would solve the problem - it
simply refuses to be master or slave, freezing my PC.
(by the way, my MB is Abit BX6/2... modern controller, I think.)

Probably this is a problem not with a controller, which is good, but
with old drive which Integrated Electronics couldn't imagine there could
be more than one drive on the channel.
