This kind of problem doesn't appear very often, but every electronic
device/system has both a maximum AND minimum operating temperature.  If
you exceed either of those thresholds, then there will be problems.

In this case, I think you are saying that by cooling the board (and not
the chips) you can cause a failure.  If that is correct, then you probably
have either a cold solder joint or a broken trace (metal path).  Remember
back to your basic electronics training that covered the topics of thermal
expansion and cooling. As you cool the board, the parts shrink and "pull
away" from each other causing an open circuit.
