I just got DSL service to my home and have installed a Microsoft MN-100
router (it was at Staples for $35). How paranoid do I need to be? The ISP
provides a dynamic IP address, although it may stay stable for some time. Is
Stateful Packet Inspection really a necessity? I know what it does, but is
it really necessary if I have not opened any ports to my internal addresses?
I use non-routable addresses for my computers and rely on NAT in the router.
Is there intrusion detection software that I should be running?

I am very knowledgeable on networking and understand the technologies
involved. However, I don't have any "hands on" experience with how
vulnerable a DSL home connection might be. Any suggestions from experienced
users would be welcome. I have followed a few earlier threads and perhaps we
should put together a "users guide to living with DSL." I just might do
that!

Thank you for your input.

Peter
